OUR CURRENT ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Bernie Clarkson

An oil painter living in East London.  Painting landscapes, seascapes, and figuration.

“My present painting project is Woman in a Patterned Environment where I use fashion and pattern to create a tapestry of detail, colour and design.
The work is partly inspired by reflecting back on my fashion background and lines taken from the wonderful poem The Parlour by Mimi Khalvati.
“This woman… they lose themselves in foliage.”
I particularly love the aesthetic mise-en-scene that this title conjures up, woman at the centre of nature, independent, free, part of an enchanted world, enjoying a moment of escapism.
My work is combining nature’s visual sensory richness with fashion’s pleasure in adornment and opportunities to dress up.
The more I think about these paintings I am coming to think of them as film stills, a moment of beauty and romanticism caught in time, a specific moment archiving a ‘portal to somewhere else’.
In the troubled world that we live in it’s good to lose ourselves in foliage from time to time.”
Bernie’s work is available to see from 17th March.

There will be a private view event open to all to attend on 14th April, 7-9pm.
